WAAGH BUZZSAW

This is the sequel army to Waagh Steeljaw. I have gone for the other extreme, from super fast movement and almost all vehicles to Full infantry based with very few vehicles. I have always like the idea of the Badmoons and since most people (around here anyway) go Goffs, the Badmoons will be a bit different i hope.

The army was being designed for the NZGT 2004. I got Players choice, 3rd place best army and 2nd place best painted (later amended to 1st equal) in 2003, so i have some stiff competition from my own armies :) I am keen on going for a painting prize again so need to put the most effort i can into the army. Since Badmoons main colour is yellow they are going to be quite bright. Usually the yellows i see are quite badly done so that is a concern i have, i need to get the yellow right. Go here for an article on how i paint yellow.

Well in the end the army did quite well at the NZGT, i got 2nd overall (again for teh 4th year in a row), 2nd Best Army, 2nd Players Choice, 1st Best Painted, 2nd Butcher (gameplay points). the painting was well recieved, though i was a bit annoyed to run out of time and have to rush a lot of it, which i will have to go back and do up as there are also a lot of chips and damage.

The army was also taken to the New Zealand Nationals in 2005, and 2006, getting 2nd overall and 1st overall respectively. I also took the army to Komplete Fanatic in Melbourne 2006, where i got highest gameplay, and best overall. And for the armies swansong i took it to Liber Animus 2007, an invitation only tournament also in Melbourne where the army got highest gameplay, got a perfect painting score and also took out first overall.

Its also placed in other small local events, but i can't remember all of them.

This army has dominated quite a bit in both NZ and Australia.

Go here for the army book i took to the GT.

One of the key things with this army is that it had to stand out individually, each unit needed to be able to be seperated easily from the others by my opponents. but it still had to look like an army, thus i kept certain key colours like the yellow and purple in all or most of the units, but each unit had something signature about it, even if it had a back banner pole (people don;t look at them for some reason). Some people still could not tell them apart, but the regular tourney players gave me good compliments, one guy said it was the first ork army ever where he could tell the units apart just by looking at them.

One thing you will notice on all of teh nobs, is that they have a large belly and a belly plate of some sort. i got the idea for the large bellys from reading the badmoon fluff, and the idea of the belly plates came from reading an early draft of the ogres book. they worship food (a bit like badmoons with lots of dosh) and so protect their bellies with large elaborate belly plates. they are supposed to show wealth and stature and that fits the badmoons well i think.

At some later point i will do full unit photos and a full army shot.

Da Wun, Da Onlee, Da Buzzsaw

The warboss, basically a cave troll armature with a dread, crisis suit, and a ton of other bits added to him, there are a few more details about him in the WIP section of the site.

Shakfang Zoggog and Da Ardest Boyz

These guys were added to the army after the first GT. i needed to boost the army to 2000pts. There are 17 ard boyz, and to show that they are more elite than normal boys (becasue they can afford armour), i used the fantasy nob torso as its a little bit bigger than a basic ork torso, i used this torso on every single model, and since only one comes on a sprue. To make the unit look armoured, i used a combination of plasticard, plastic tubes, mesh, and various ork combinations such as iron jaws and shoulder pads. i used a heap of rivets from grandtonline.

they are meant to look like they can fight in close quarters such as buildings or tunnels, so there are riot shields etc. Teh unit is a close combat monster, and usually wins the game for me, even if they all die in the process.

This is the nob, armed with power klaw/rocket combo. his belly plate is an ogre one.

Ignore the guy on the left, hes from a different squad :). my favourite is the guy 2 from the right, as he looks like an american football player.

Teh middle guy is a bit paranoid, so has a massive armour chest plate, and you can see the two right guys have leg guards as well.

the guy on the left is another gridiron stule guy, and i actually carved out the middle of the 2nd guys faceplate to put in the mesh.

3 guys with liberal uses of mesh, and overlapping armour plates.

Ork with a burna, the burna itself is from the army of a penitent engine. as its metal i have used a metal devastator back pack as a counter balance.

The two rocket guys. as the rocket is a bit bulky, i gave them each a shield so they can still get some cover, the rockets are designed to be small so tehy can be used in close quarters.

MadFang DuffSkab and Da Jolly Orks

I have two Flash Git units, and they have the exact same stuff, so i wanted to make sure they were quite different from each other. this unit is my favourite of the two, i really like Tau stuff, i have a tau army i will finish one day ( i have painted more tau as bits for my orks than in the actual army), the tau guns and parts are so cool, and kind of wasted on the tau.

Since i have two identical git units, i emphasised the blue on these guys by painting their trousers blue, so that they would stand out alone more.

In the unit all the burst cannons are big shootas and the rest are more dakka shootas.

Since i am using the same model for all the nobs they needed to be different, he is one of the few with a gun in his right hand, and without a pointing left arm. In the WIP section the model had two burst cannons, but they were a bit silly and too big, so i gave him O'Shovahs sword instead, which i serrated, and he has his arm. to make his face different from the other nobs, so i gave him a crisis suit face plate. this unit is meant to be a bit more techy, so i gave him a smart link with the cable.

The first 4 jolly orks, from the left,

UgFang Grotgut and Da Gorers

This is the flash git unit that looted marine (and chaos and sisters) stuff. Since they are emulating marines i gave them all the warhammer black orc full face helmet, which i think helped make them look mean. turns out the marine range is quite limited so i ended up using lots of bolters in different groups, and all heavy bolters (of some sort) as big shootas.

as you can see they have black trousers, that, the banner poles and the helmets should be enough to tell them apart from the other flash gits.

The nob, once again i wanted him to be different, so i decided he had had a run in with a dread (where do you think buzzsaw got his suit from, someone had to distract the dread). So he has an assault cannon arm and a dread leg. i added some exhausts and tubes to show how he gets around, and gave him ghazghulls head carved down to fit the warhammer irongob.

From the left:

Lt Kernel Dakka Duffgrim and Da Cadiorkth 8fth

This unit is the biggest in the army and needed to be distinct. since they have (effectively) the basic weaponry of the army (shootas and big shootas) i decided that ripping of the IG would be amusing. not with all of the guns like the flash gits (to avoid confusion) more in imagery. i had not tried out the new catachan green or graveyard earth so i thought why not.

to make them different from other plastic orks, i added IG accessories from the cadian box, the heavy weapon box and the new tank accessory sprue. they were painted with a catachan green and black, highlighted with camo green.

the trousers and other cloth was done in graveyard earth highlighted with bone.

i think the colour mix is quite striking and if i was to do a bloodaxe army i would use this colouring for the whole army.

The nob, since i was using IG bits, he needed to be an officer of some sort. i looked high and low for a hat that was not too small and finally used the old metal tank commanders hat. His bosspole has a cadian helmet added, his choppa is from some warhammer ork, and his big shoota is an IG autocannon, i bulked it to his arm with plasticard, greenstuff and rivets. his belly plate is from a leman russ side hatch.

Orks with bigshootas all have the plastic non torso to make them bigger (the bigger you are the bigger the gun you get), from left

The boys, the last pic is just to show some of the accessories they were carrying. while the shootas with straps were a dog to paint i really like how the strapping turned out once painted.

Mad 'Amish McDuff and Da Skirt Wearing Jordies

The theme of this unit is a scottish one, i used the models for the plastic legs from the fantasy sprue which have the skirts rather than trousers. This unit as rocket boys are basically wannabe tankbustas, so they have the same marine bits as the tankbustas. The whole unit has the same tartan pattern on their kilts and also some straps and other bits. This was once again to make them stand out and as a practice for another idea i have :)

The tartan was done by:

The Nobs bellyshield is a chaos marine champion, held on by chains painted in the emperors children scheme. I carved down his trousers and sculpted a kilt around his waist. he has a kit bag from the chaos marine accessories, which has extra GS to fit it properly. His rocket launcher is 1/3 of a havok launcher, and in a tip of my hat to the greencroosade he has a shield with the green maltese cross on the back of the launcher. There are GS straps to hold it onto his wrist guard, to fit the rocket launcher flush i bent the hhand back. His shoulder pads are plastic termie pads, with GS straps holding them to his body. His choppa is two halves of the warboss choppa added to a plastic chaos warrior halberd pole.

The boys are wearing a variety of marine shoulder pads, from left, dark angel, world eater, celestial lion (gave up on the symbol after 3 tries),whitescar, imperial fist, space wolf, ironwarrior, emperors children, alpha legion, word bearer, black legion, thousand sun.

The rocketers all have the plastic non torso to make them bigger (the bigger you are the bigger the gun you get), from left;

Zog Skarslag and Da Skullface boys

To show the theme of this unit, i have a) given them the marine helmet bosspole each, and also each model has a skull helmet, like the metal tankbusta models. The trousers of the models are black to make them a little sneakier looking. the purple is base imperial purple, highlighted with vallejo sky blue.

Belly shield from a ork shoulder pad, rocketlauncher is two cadian missile launchers, with extrabits stuck to it. his marine helmets are a badmoon one, then a sons of ursus one ( a friends DIY chapter), and one that could be an alphalegion one.

The normal guys, from left

The rocket guys, from left

Kaptain Skargut MadStuff and Da Choppa Boys

The theming of the trukk squad is to make them sort of outcasts from the gun guys, so they have no guns on the models, just two choppas each. Pants are redish to make them a bit more outlandish.

Nob with Powerclaw, choppa and attack squig. Choppa is a plastic chaos halberd, the squig is old school grabba slasha squig. Pirate hat is from greenstuff.

The burna guy has the torso from the plastic fantasy ork nob which is slightly bigger than the normal ones. His burna is from two catachan flamers, and a cadian backpack, i used guitar strings for the pipes. The rest have a variety of choppas from 40K or fantasy, and the left guy has a templar shoulder pad.

a crimson fist and 13th company shoulder pad, and the 3rd guy has a mace made from the std bearers arms.

Da Jolly Ork

THis is the trukk for the boys, when i started the army i wanted to do the whole thing in pirate theme, the trukkers were teh first unit so they got that treatment (well the nob anyway), but that overall theme went by the way, but the trukk as destined to stay as part of the that theme.

The basic shape is the back half of a wartrukk and the front half of a landspeeder. to this i wrapped plastic card to get teh boat shape. more plastic card was added for the floor and second level. a sentinel cockpit was added to the front. i added a fence of popsicle sticks and added fantasy shields and glyphs to them. a plastic tube was put in the middile of the top layer for the mast to sit in, and the mast is made of dowel. it also has a rare earth magnet at the bottom so i can take it out.

I got the ships wheel from a model shop (no idea the brand it was in italian or something). the captain is the old flashgit nob.each the mast poles have chaos garlgoyle heads added to each end and the grot cutta crows nest on top. the rope was done from twine and wound a lot where it was needed.

The sail itself was printed at a flagmakers (don;t you love it when friends of yours have useful jobs), and then it was painted over the print, hardened with varnish and stiched on. it was orignally a lot more puffy, but bein in a figure case has flattend it a bit.

You can;t see it but the floor has that swanky plasticard textured to look like urinal patterns, i don;t know the technical term, but i see it in urinals :)

The glpyhs read waagh buzzsaw, lots of dakka, lots of teef.

Its a bit rushed due to bad planning for the GT, so the paint job is a bit arse.

The rocket is from the hunter killer missile. the mudguards are from the warbuggy, vairous wrabuggy, chariot and marine stuff went into the armour plates. the lip around the bottom of the boat is from right angled plasticard, so its also on the underside, with a lot of random rivets. front tracks are from a warbike. back wheels are from the chariot. the spars holding the top deck to the boat are more plasticard shaped like girders.

the rail gun on the bottom is the super charged engine. You can kind of see some wire coming out of the yellow pipe and going into the tracks, the pipe is plastic tube.

The engine is a warbuggy engine right onto the back, with a defiler army on it, with 3 different sized plastic tube as the smoke stack.

Da Grim Krooza, and Da Flash Grot

Rocket buggy one made from the grot cutta, i had to rush them a bit, so the painting sucks. sails are the same as the big boat. this is the grim krooza, the glyphs in the bottom left corner say that in ork. an the glyphs on the top say KZ7 (old NZ americas cup boat)

Another one, this is the flash grot, and NZ22 (more americas cup nonsense), also badly painted.

BadRunt Skarstuff and Da Zzap boys

Old school slaver, with rocket launcher. launcher is a chaos smoke launcher on a spear top and a plasticard trigger guard. squig hound is an old school squig.

Grot crew, except for the one in the cloak, who is an ammo runt for the warboss.

Big gun1. all made from Hammerhead turrets, and Ion cannons with gun drone tops as the back ski. the grots on board each gun are not crew just made to look like it, in the game the seperarte grots above are the crew.. this one has an immolator heavy flamer as exhaust and the flamer fuel tanks as a fuel tank. teeth are made from plasticard.

Big gun 2. exhaust is leman russ exhaust and fuel tank is the IG lascannon energy pack. this one has a whole extra piece jutting out, to make it look like extra planks were bolted on.

Big Gun 3. Exhaust is crisis suit fusion gun and fuel tank is off thenew IG tank accessory sprue.

Da Smashas and Krashas

3 killa kans, with rockets. i gave them all buzzsaws, to fit the army name, and the badmoon glyph from teh gobbo box to mark them as badmoons. they also have tau rocket launchas to make them a bit different. these bous have done very well in games, (the ones they survive anyway).

Messengers and Objectives

We had to have 3 commandos at teh GT, so here are mine.

Here is a model i had to make as a hero for Liber, i made him so he can be a Mekboy with a Kustom Force Field and/or with a big shoota.

Komplete Fanatic used some cityfight missions so here are some of my stratagems and objectives
